How do I moderate a student's quiz attempt in New Quizzes?

You can moderate quiz settings for individual students in New Quizzes. Moderation settings apply only to the quiz you are moderating and include reopening quiz attempts and managing timer settings.

Reopening a student's quiz reopens a student's most recent attempt. Previously recorded responses are retained and the quiz timer resumes from its remaining time from the previous submission.

Moderation timer settings apply to all attempts for the quiz in which they are set. You can add a specific amount of minutes or hours to each attempt, or remove time limit requirements. Only one timer setting can be selected for each student. To adjust timer settings for all quizzes in the course for a student, you can add accommodations.

If timer settings are set at both the course level and the quiz level, course-level settings are applied first. Quiz-level settings cannot be reduced by course-level settings.

Notes:

Quiz availability dates still apply when moderating a quiz. If the Until date passes before a student completes an extra attempt or extended-time quiz, any in-progress quizzes auto-submit and the quiz closes, even if the student's attempt has not expired.
Currently, bulk moderation is not supported in New Quizzes.
If anonymous grading is enabled, you do not see students' names while grading.

Moderate Quiz

In New Quizzes, click the Moderate tab.

Open Moderation Settings

Find the student you want to moderate [1]. You can also use the Search field to find a specific student. Then click the Edit button [2].

Reopen Quiz

To reopen the student's most recent quiz attempt, click the Reopen button.

Accept Message

A warning message displays to inform you that the student can resume their quiz attempt from its previous position [1]. To accept and reopen the quiz, click the Reopen button [2].

Manage Attempts

The Moderate panel displays the number of allowed attempts per the assessment settings [1].

To give the student additional attempts for the quiz, type a number or use the arrow buttons in the Additional Attempts field [2].

Note: Additional attempts granted through accommodations follow the quiz scoring settings configured for the assessment. Depending on the quiz settings, Canvas may keep the highest, average, latest, or first attempt score.

Adjust Timer Settings

In the quiz accommodation tray, open the Time adjustments dropdown menu [1] and click the Give additional time option [2].

Add Additional Time

To add additional time to the quiz attempt, select the Give additional time option [1]. Then select the amount of time [2]. Time units can be set to minutes or hours.

Remove Time Limit

To remove the time limit from the attempt, select the Remove time limit (unlimited) option.

View Total Allowed Time

The Total allowed time field [1] updates in real time as you adjust the time setting, showing the combined total from the quiz base time [2], any course-level accommodation [3], and the quiz-level adjustment [4] you're making.

Notes:

If a student is actively taking the quiz, the tray targets that in-progress session and will not reopen a previously graded one.
If the quiz is past its due date, all accommodation fields are disabled. A message explains why no changes can be made.
If granting extra time would push the student's completion past the due date, an informational warning is shown. The action is not blocked.

Apply Changes

To save changes, click the Reopen & Apply button.

View Timer Adjustments

View the moderation timer settings in the Accommodations column. This column displays the cumulative effect of course-level accommodations and moderation timer settings.

Enable Reduced Answer Choices for a Student

To moderate a student's quiz and reduce answer choices, click the student’s name in the moderation list [1].

Click the Reduced Answer Choices toggle on [2]. This removes one incorrect answer from all multiple-choice questions with four or more options.

You can also apply the changes to the in-progress attempts [3].

Click the Save button [4].

Manually Submit In-Progress Attempts

If students are currently taking a quiz, the Moderate page displays the number of in-progress attempts [1]. To manually submit in-progress attempts, click the [number] attempts link [2].

Submit Attempts

Students with in-progress quiz attempts display in the Students list [1]. By default, you can manually submit quizzes for all students in the list. If you do not want to manually submit a student's quiz, deselect the checkbox for the student [2].

To manually submit the quiz for the selected students, click the Submit Manually button [3].
