Units control the entire flow of your course and its content. As an instructor, you can add units, add items to a unit, and manage unit settings. You can also reorder all units and unit items.
Open Units
In Global Navigation, click the Units tab.
View units Index Page
The Units Index Page is designed with global settings at the top of the page [1] followed by individual units [2]. Course content items are nested within each unit [3].
Note: The units Index Page supports keyboard shortcuts. To view a window with a list of keyboard navigation shortcuts, press the Shift+Question Mark keys simultaneously on your keyboard.
View Units Global Settings
Global settings include collapsing or expanding all units [1], and viewing the unit as learner [2]. To manage publish status, click the Publish icon [3]. This will allow you to bulk publish units and unit items [4], and bulk unpublish units and unit items [5].
To add a unit, click the Add unit button.
Notes:
- The Collapse All button displays if one or more units are expanded. The Expand All button displays if all units are collapsed.
- If a user with a course enrollment collapses or expands one or more units, the units Index Page retains the state of each unit when they return to the page.
View Units
In units, you can view all the units in your course. units are organized by order of progression.
Units house the content items within each unit. By default, units are expanded and show all items in the unit [1]. To collapse the unit, click the collapse arrow [2].
Note: If you choose to collapse or expand one or more units, the units Index Page retains the state of each unit.
Each unit header contains the name of the unit [1]. The header may also contain the number of items [2].
Manage Unit
The icons in the unit header control the entire unit.
Add Item
To add a new content item to the unit, click the Add icon.
Add Item from Content Index
To add from the Content Index, click the Add from Content Index button [1]. To add objects that can be synced or detached when added to a unit, click the Add from Syncable Objects button [2]. You can also Add items from SCORM [3], but this must be enabled by the CSM and added by the Admin.
You can add new or existing content items in Canvas to a module. You can also add an item to multiple modules, or multiple iterations of an item to one module. Select one of the following item types:
- Pages
- Assignments
- Assessments
- Files
To add the item, drag and drop the item into the unit [1]. You can also bulk select items to the unit [2], and click the Add button [3]. To delete the selected items, click the Delete button [4].
Notes:
- Deleting an item will do a hard delete of it in the Content Index and in any units they are in.
- Duplicating a learning object is not supported.
Add Item from Syncable Objects
Learning objects that are stored in the Syncable Object library are accessible here.
To preview the item, click the Preview button [1]. This will open a new tab. To add the item, click the Add to unit button [2] and select your unit. You can also drag and drop individual items[3], or bulk select multiple items [4]. Click the Add button to add your selected items [5].
Notes:
- Assignments, assessments, files, and pages are supported.
- External links and tools are not supported.
Manage Unit Items
In the Options drop-down menu [1], you can remove a unit [2].
You can also move the items to a different unit. Click the Move to unit menu [1], and select the unit where you want to move the item [2].
Manage Unit Settings
To manage unit settings, click the Settings icon.
In the unit settings, you cane dit a unit. Edit the unit to rename the unit [1], lock units [2], and set prerequisites [3].
You can require students to complete items in a particular order [1], or you can decide how students must complete a requirement [2].
Reorder units and unit items
You canreorder a unitby hovering over the drag handle next to the name of the unit and dragging the unit to the desired location [1]. You can also reorder a unit item [2] by hovering over the drag handle next to the name of the item and dragging the item to the desired location.
View unit Icons
units can be filled with different types of content. Each unit item also includes an icon with its type:
- Assignment [1]: a course assignment
- Page [2]: a page of content to read
- Assessment [3]: a course assessment
- External Link [4]: an external link to view outside of the course
- External Tool [5]: an external tool to view outside of the course
- File [6]: a file to download or view
View Learning Object Editor
To modify the page, click the Content tab [1]. To manage duration, click the Settings tab [2]. To manage content availability for learners, click the Assign tab [3]. To refine your text, change tone, or generate content from scratch, go to the Ignite AI chat box [4].
Click the Options icon [1]. You can also add the content to syncable objects [2], but this will not convert the current learning object. You will need to re-add the item from Syncable Objects and remove the current learning object manually.
To remove content from the unit, click the Remove from unit button [3]. To delete the content entirely, click the Delete item button [4].
View As Learner
To view the units index page as a student, click the View as learner button.
