Show All Pages Immediately

When the link to "Pages" is selected, it takes you to the home page and shows only the home page. You have to select the link "View All Pages" to actually see all pages. This is pretty stupid.

The link to pages should show all pages not the home page first. Why should I have to make another selection when I want to always see all pages first?

Hi @tfilipiak1,

In the "Pages" area, if the "Use as Front Page" option is used (even without setting the page as the course "Home Page"), all of the other pages that exist in the course are not displayed and the "View All Pages" button needs to be clicked on to view them all.

If you do not want that experience, after using the "View All Pages" button, find the page that is set as the front page (it will be labeled) and click on its "three dots" icon on the right-side. In that three dots icon, click on the "Remove as Front Page" option.

I agree 100%. The current behavior has bothered me since 2012, when I was first introduced to Canvas. There is no reason to assume that page designated as the front page is more likely to be of interest to the teacher or student than any other page in the list. In fact, it's less likely because users see the home page everytime they navigate to the course. Once in the course, they can access and edit (with permission) the home page by simply clicking the Home link in the global nav. In my view, the current behavior is more of an obstacle to what I want to accomplish than a help.

No. It does not help. Yes, the "View All Pages" is there. I also understand what you are saying.

However, I want a functional change. We already have a page that our college wants displayed as the front/home page. But when I, as the instructor, go to Pages…I don't want to see the home page. I want to see ALL of the pages immediately after I select the link on the left portion of the screen. Having to select the "View All Pages" button is a waste of my time. We do not allow students to see the pages except by linking them to items in the modules. The modules are the "touch point" for all content in our courses. I would supposed most people set up their courses that way!

This question caught my eye too, as I also find this behavior incredibly annoying. What @tfilipiak1 is asking about isn't how to set or remove the Front Page, but explaining that when a user (an Instructor or Admin, presumably) in the course is trying to see the full list of all Pages in a course, if you have a front page set clicking on the Pages menu link doesn't actually take you to the list of Pages. It redirects you to the front page. It makes no sense to have to select 'View All Pages' as a second layer action when you select the Pages link. No one is clicking the Pages link to go to the front page - we have the Home link for that.

I understand what @tfilipiak1 (and others) are requesting and why. A question forum in the Instructure/Canvas Community is not the location for requesting new (or requesting modifications/enhancements/changes to) functionality.

Unforunately, the location in the Community for this is currently under development but I will link to the Your Community, Refreshed - Instructure Community blog post and the last paragraph of the "Your Voice, Your Community" section. I also recommend monitoring the Product Blog for when the idea process becomes available.

@dbrace, The OP voiced a concern of many of my faculty and I'd bet thousands of other instructors. A common best practice in quality course design is to use the Home page to give directions to students, especially about how to start the course and what to do after reading the homepage.

However, removing the Front Page also ends its use as the Homepage. Removing the Front page isn't a valid option for many quality enhanced courses.

The 'Use a Homepage' function needs to be separate from the 'Use as Front Page' function. If the 'Pages' index list isn't available to students (in order to reduce confusion for students), then the front page of the Pages index list would be more helpful to just be the 'All pages' list, rather than having to click the 'View All Pages' button and wait for that to load after having just waited for the Pages link to load. It's a waste of clicks on a regular basis.

It would be better if Canvas isolated the two options - use as Homepage and use as Front page, separately, to allow that flexibility for instructors and reduce clicks. It would be interesting to see how many times each instructor has to click 'View all pages.'

The double click to see the index list of pages has always been a bugbear from a design POV. We tend to not use the Pages, as a LH menu item and stick to modules for the student view. So pages is more an editing thing, and I too wish you could just click and go straight to the alphabetical index.

Wait… so all that "Set as front page" does is makes the selected page appear when Pages is selected in the sidebar?

What an unintuitive setting… I can't think of a reason that people would want two options in the Course Menu to do the same thing (Home and Pages).

This does not apply to a case where I want "home" to show a front page and pages to show a list of pages. It's in the name, pages, plural, should be a list.
