Meet Mastery n Number of Times

Hi, I can't get this working right. I've created outcomes where the calculation method is to meet mastery twice. I've aligned them to several assignments. The grade book displays mastery as met when it's only been achieved on one of the assignments.

It's not showing positive or negative for the other assignments. (I've checked, and I haven't clicked "Don't post to Learning Mastery Gradebook")

Does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it?

I believe what you're seeing is a limitation of how Canvas Outcomes currently work.

Although Canvas allows you to configure an outcome with a calculation method such as "Decaying Average", "N Times", or "Highest Score", mastery for an individual outcome can only be achieved once. When the same outcome is aligned to multiple assignments, Canvas evaluates the evidence for that single outcome rather than tracking separate "mastery occurrences" across assignments in the way many people expect.

As a result, the Learning Mastery Gradebook may show the outcome as mastered after a single successful assessment even when you've configured the outcome to require mastery twice.

If your goal is to require students to demonstrate mastery on two separate assessments, the workaround is typically to create two distinct outcomes (for example, "Outcome A – Attempt 1" and "Outcome A – Attempt 2") and align them separately. That allows Canvas to track each demonstration independently rather than treating them as repeated evidence for the same outcome.

Unfortunately, while Canvas lets you configure the calculation method this way, it doesn't currently support requiring the same outcome to be mastered multiple distinct times across different assignments in the manner you're describing.
