New Speedgrader Comment Library...

I was very excited to see the new version of the speed grader comment library that lets you save comments to specific assignments. I hadn't used the comment library much in the past because it got too clunky and hard too sort through, but I was very excited to be able to save comment "trunks" to particular assignments and spent a lot of time this semester organizing comments to assignments.

However, when I copied my course, these did not copy over. I asked Canvas chat, and they didn't have answers. Is there a way to ensure that my course copy copies my assignment level comments in the Library?

And if I can't, what is even the point of saving on particular assignments?

I didn’t realize until recently that SpeedGrader comments could be saved at the assignment or course level either. I completely agree—the legacy comment library became pretty overwhelming once you had a large number of comments with no real organization.

From what I understand, assignment‑level comments not copying during a course copy is likely intentional, even though it’s frustrating. Assignment‑specific comments are often considered instructor‑authored content, while most assignment content itself is delivered via Blueprint syncs. To avoid conflicts or unintended overwrites, Canvas appears to have limited the ability to copy assignment‑level comment libraries for now.

I agree that this diminishes the value of organizing comments by assignment, especially since that feature was such a big improvement to the workflow. Hopefully Canvas extends course copy support to include assignment‑level comments in the future, because the use case is very real.
