Picture Assignment Submissions Load Sideways

Hello. I am looking for some serious, fast help regarding student picture submissions for assignments,

When student pictures load inside of assignment, they are sideways. When I use "Rotate" button, ALL tools disappear, not allowing any kind of mark-up or any tool use. First picture is what I see right away. Second is an edited image with TOOLS UNAVAILABLE!!

Hello @TomJeanson. I had this issue brought to me by an instructor not long ago as well. Instructure pointed out that this functionality is not available in the DocViewer. If the image has been rotated, you cannot use the annotation tools.

The updated version of the online guide for DocViewer includes this statement: To rotate the current page 90 degrees clockwise, click the Rotate button [4]. Pages with annotations cannot be rotated, and rotated pages cannot be annotated.

While it isn't optimal, laying an annotation on top of a sideways picture could suffice in some situations. In the case of my instructor, who is annotating a photo of a hand-written page of Korean, it won't work.

So this issue is not being considered to be fixed?! I never had this problem before the “update”! If it loads in my DocViewer sideways, we should be able to rotate as much as we need & tools should never disappear. Thank you for your help

I should add, my students are submitting their photos upright & they show up for me to correct them sideways. I was given some instructions for students to save photos upright to then upload file, still they show up sideways & I can’t give them my best feedback sideways. Are there any options to fix this? Can’t they do another update & change this setting back?

@TomJeanson This is an issue that Instructure is aware of and are so far unwilling to fix. The best thing you can do is to report this issue to Instructure Support. If you can reach out to your local Canvas admin and ask them to elevate this issue with your CSM, that would be helpful as well. We need every affected user to make Instructure aware for them to take action.

Does anyone know why Instructure is unwilling to fix this issues, because ours is an accrediation issue with our schools accrediators and we need to be able to sign our students assignments with our signatures in the correct place.

@MS49753282 My understanding is that there are some new folks at Instructure looking into this issue. I encourage you to submit a ticket to Instructure Support so that they understand the magnitude of this problem. If you can reach out to your local Canvas upport and get them to bring this up with your CSM, that would be useful as well.

Until they fix this issue, have the student copy and paste the pictures into a word document (I recommend one picture per page, and enlarge to 50% of the page size or a good size for your images) then submit the document. You can annotate it and all the images will appear upright. The other advantage is that you can quickly scroll through multiple images in the document instead of having to click on multiple images they have uploaded and its organized if you create the document with headers or place holders for the images. It's a time saver.

Tip: I have my students save the document as a PDF file. In Word or Google Docs, select File, Save As, then choose PDF or export the document as a PDF. It reduces the image size and makes it easier to download and view.
