Certain group can access unpublished modules

Hello,

I have set up a Canvas course with two groups: students and supervisors.

It seems the supervisor group are able to see unpublished modules. Not sure how to fix this. I have checked their permissions - they have the same as the students with a few more added re marking. They are unable to publish/unpublish, but they can still see all of the unpublished modules.

As your supervisors have a grading role, they likely have a similar role to a Teacher/TA, resulting them being able to view unpublished modules, but they cannot publish/unpublish or make changes to the pages, which is standard Canvas behaviour.

Students visibility would still be limited as you have described.

You might look into a Blueprint and only sync relevant modules as you want all to see and view as an alternative?

In order to assist with your query, I have a few trouble shooting questions:

have you acted as a student to view what they can see, and if so, is this as you would expect?
when the supervisor says they can see the unpublished modules, can they see the content, or just the module headings?
have you looked at the roles and permissions set at the account level? It might be that your institution has a supervisor or TA role which will likely also be one of the reasons they can see more than students, particularly with marking added to their role.

Thanks for your reply. Answers to your questions:

Yes students can see as they should in student mode (they can't see the unpublished modules)
Supervisors can see content as well as headings
Yes roles and permissions have been checked. Supervisor was an added role - and yes they can see more than the students - but still not sure how they can see the unpublished modules?

@oneilllj is correct, since this is an added on role by your institution, they have to choose a base role to build it off of. They likely selected Teacher or TA and removed the editing permissions. Despite the editing permissions being removed, they will still have access to the unpublished modules. The only roles that cannot see unpublished modules or content would be the student and observer role, and any custom role built off of those specific roles.
