How does marking work on a question with multiple hotspots?

I am setting up a question where there are three hotspots on an image, and the learner is required to click somewhere in each of them to be marked as correct.

The marker is allocating full points if all marks are placed inside ANY of the hotspots - so, if a learner clicks three times in exactly the same location, they receive full points (as long as that location is inside any one of the hotspots).

I'm sure this is not how the marker worked on this question type before - my feeling is that it used to require the user to place one click inside each of the three hotspots for a correct answer. I can't even think of a question that would be valuable to ask where three marks inside one of three hotspots would be considered correct…

Am I doing something wrong? Am I wrong in thinking that this question type marked differently before? 🤷

When you add multiple correct hotspot shapes to a single Hot Spot question in New Quizzes, each shape is an acceptable location for the correct answer. That does not automatically mean the student must click once in every shape. If the item’s intent is “identify a chloroplast,” you can draw hotspots around every chloroplast and a single correct click in any one of those hotspots will mark 'the item' (not question) correct. NOTE: if there are multiple hotspots, an incorrect click will mark the question wrong (see below). The LMS treats the hotspots as a set of correct regions to match against the student’s clicks, it doesn’t inherently force “click all N spots” behavior.

I will try demonstrate this below, I hope it's understandable. For example, if your question stem asks “Which part is the chloroplast?” you can draw hotspots around every chloroplast, e.g., 4 hotspots (max 4 clicks available to student) in the image below:

Scenario 1 (below): Student clicks only once in one of the 4 hotspots √ Full Credit

Scenario 2: Student clicks 4 times, 3 correctly, 1 incorrectly - X No Credit

In sum, adding multiple hotspots equals multiple acceptable locations, not multiple required clicks. If your stem asks “Which part is the chloroplast?” you can draw hotspots around every chloroplast and one correct click anywhere in those hotspots will mark the item correct.

Draw hotspots around all acceptable instances.

Make the stem explicit: “Click one chloroplast in the image.”

Result: one click in any correct hotspot = correct (robust and user-friendly).
