I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to create custom groups of students that aren’t tied to a specific course section or class period for the purpose of due date differentiation.
Right now, the only options I see for the “Assign to…” feature are entire class periods or individual students. What I’d really like to do is create something like an “Extra Time Accommodation” group where I can place students with IEPs or 504s and then give them a differentiated due date without having to manually select each student every time.
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
- Groups: This seemed promising at first, but groups only work if the assignment is set up as a group assignment, which doesn’t fit this use case.
- Creating a separate course and merging it as a section: I tested creating a new Canvas course, adding the students, and merging it into the main course. However, each student has to accept the invite to the new course, which feels cumbersome and hard to manage.
- Copy/paste into “Assign to…”: I considered keeping a list of names and pasting them in, but students have to be clicked individually- pasting a list doesn’t work.
Am I missing a feature or workflow that allows for persistent, reusable student groupings specifically for differentiated due dates or accommodations?
