Best practices for student notifications

Dear all, our students have different preferences for subscribing to notifications which means that they don't get all the same ones. We would like to provide best practices on the essential ones and I'm wondering if you would have some to share?

In our district, we recommend the basic notifications that Instructure has set by default. We recommend that students or teachers take a look annually to review their notifications and make sure they're serving their needs best. We also try to remind them that they are welcome to change their notifications at any time (sometimes they forget!). It may not be the perfect situation, but that has worked for us for the last few years. I would be very interested in hearing from others who might do it differently.
