Exactly like this user:
I have marked each question as "Check" and clicked Update. Under "Assessment" the Grade is still 0/0 and the dropdown is greyed out. I want to be able to mark each assignment as Complete in SpeedGrader, ideally without having a point system.
Hello @NathanielStahl,
I'd love to help troubleshoot this. Just for clarification, you are doing this in Quizzes or Assignments? If Quizzes, classic?
Thanks @DiannaDK , these are New Quizzes, though they have been set to the Assignments group.
I'm experimenting in my instance, so I have more questions, @NathanielStahl .
Yes, these are Essay questions. It's fine to not have the scores count toward the grade, but I'm trying to avoid points altogether (and the negotiating that comes with them).
I believe because of the way New Quizzes works, the score in SpeedGrader (along with something like the complete/incomplete indicator as it's related) are grayed out. Changes can still be in the grades area itself, but not SpeedGrader. I don't know if this is something that will ever change, and I do agree it's weird to be able to make a change in one area but not another. That does seem to be the intended design for now though.

I would like to bring this issue to the attention of anyone who is listening again. It sounds like @NathanielStahl might be using specifications grading, and I have been trying to help an instructor at our university who also uses specifications grading figure out how to do so in Canvas. It's not a great experience, and this is one example that could improve the experience if an instructor could, in SpeedGrader, change the dropdown and indicate whether something is Complete or Incomplete. Specifications grading does not usually use points, at least not in the traditional way. The instructor that I am working with does not use points but has a rubric for every assignment with four levels. The instructor needs to be able to go to SpeedGrader, use the rubric to assess and also mark the assignment as either Complete or Incomplete. The instructor can only do the first part of that right now and then must go to the Grades tool to mark each student's submission as Complete or Incomplete. Could the developers please allow the instructor to do this in SpeedGrader? This would improve the instructor's experience so much.
@Chris , I'm wondering whether this might be considered a a UX bug—behaving as intended but nevertheless unexpected and causing pain for users, not to mention internally inconsistent. If New Quizzes allows a quiz to be worth 0 points and to display the grade as with the grade displayed as complete or incomplete, it should provide the instructor with a mechanism to assign the grade in speedgrader They should not be expected to jump to the gradebook to assign a grade after reviewing and/or providing feedback to individual quiz questions in speedgrader. I will work with @mabbott to write it up as a UX bug and we'll see what comes of it.
My faculty want to use Canvas to evaluate clinical skills for our veterinary technology program. Key Points Each skill is a separate assignment Each assignment provides students with 3 attempts to pass Each assignment has a unique rubric and an outcome of pass/fail for the skill We want to preserve the grading history for…
Hi! I've seen this question asked over the years and have never seen an answer to it beyond "have students follow the video guide." Every quarter I have a couple of students who can't access the peer papers they've been assigned to review. I can see that they've been assigned papers to review, and so can Canvas support. A…
Hi, Has anyone pursued establishing an on-site/on-campus backup of their Canvas instance (updated and ultimately similarly functional to the Beta or Test instances provided when Instructure hosts your LMS in AWS)?
My team is currently going through the different LTIs/APIs we have installed in our Canvas instance and making sure we have a full list of what permissions each one has, what information it gives/receives, etc. However, the list of LTIs/APIs is contradictory - the new Apps page has a Monitor tab which lists launches of…
Has anyone else had issues with an influx of duplicate users in Canvas? Ours is currently in the form of an email that already exists, becoming a new user - and not automatically merging with the user ID with the same email that also is linked to our SIS ID correctly as well. For example, user 1 is xyz@gmail.com without a…
