Canvas assignment with rubrics and outcomes

My faculty want to use Canvas to evaluate clinical skills for our veterinary technology program.

Key Points

• Each skill is a separate assignment
• Each assignment provides students with 3 attempts to pass
• Each assignment has a unique rubric and an outcome of pass/fail for the skill
• We want to preserve the grading history for each attempt

Issue
We are finding that if a student requires a second or third attempt, the grade history of the rubric scores and outcome of earlier attempts is not preserved. If the student takes a second attempt, for example, the earlier rubric and outcome data are changed to pass to reflect the latest entry.

I suspect the issue may be related to the outcome calculation.

What settings should be used to preserve that rubric entries and outcome assessments for each attempt. If the student passes, we would want the gradebook to reflect that passing grade.

There is not a way to set that up natively. A couple of possible solutions:

1. You could set up multiple assignments for each attempt. But that is likely the more annoying way to do it because of the logistics of tracking them all.
2. Have a quick comment template you could use, maybe just criteria and #, that you can put into a comment for the submission. This will help keep a running log of their rubric evaluations. This will help ensure that the most recent assessment is the one that is kept will showing the prior evaluations in the comments.
