Quizzes "Hide results from students" toggle

Why, when the "Hide results from students" toggle is on in Canvas Quiz settings, can students still see the number of correct multiple-choice and set answer questions immediately after submitting? We are taking exams and students and writing portions/questions that need grading and students are seeing that score like its the final grade.

Hi there!

Thanks so much for your patience, and I appreciate you checking in on this. I completely understand how confusing and frustrating this can be, especially during exams that include written questions needing manual grading.

What’s happening is that the Hide results from students option in New Quizzes only controls what students see inside the quiz itself, such as feedback or whether answers are marked correct or incorrect. It doesn’t stop Canvas from immediately scoring auto-graded questions and sending that score to the Gradebook. As a result, students may see a partial score right after submitting, which can look like a final grade even though grading isn’t finished yet.

To prevent students from seeing those partial scores, you’ll want to use a Manual Posting Policy along with the Hide results setting. You can turn on Hide results from students in the quiz settings, as outlined here:

Then, in the Gradebook, set the quiz to post grades manually so scores aren’t released until you’re ready:

Once you’ve finished grading the written portions of the exam, you can post the grades from the Gradebook, and students will see the full, final score all at once.
