Grade change after a term has ended

Just wondering how others are handling grade changes after a term and grading period has ended. I have a few teachers that need to enter grades for an incomplete assignment for last semester. Can anyone share their process with me? We do use grade passback to our SIS but this would be processes/procedures for updating Canvas. Thanks!!

For courses where a student needs extended access to finish out an incomplete, we create an additional "Incomplete" section in the course that has extended start and end dates, and add the student and the teacher (to allow them both to make changes to the course) to the section.

If it is just the instructor that needs to go in and make some grade changes, I go into the course, change the participation to Course and set a course end date for a few days in the future, and instruct the teacher to change the participation back to Term and save when done. Sure, it'll pop back up on student dashboards for a bit, but it ends up being less work for me and the instructor this way. This happens pretty rarely for us, so it's not a big undertaking; we mostly see it with outcomes grading.

If this happens frequently at your institution, you might consider changing your Term dates and allowing folks access for an additional week or two, though!

This is helpful! By doing it this way does this give the teacher the ability to enter the grade in the grade book? Do you guys happen to sync to a SIS? Ideally, the teacher could add the incomplete grade to the grade book, force a sync to the SIS and it would update the grade in the SIS. And you are saying the teacher can change it back to term themselves??
