Issues with Canvas Speedgrader

Hi, I am running into a frequent issue with my Speedgrader. For context, students are responding to a discussion prompt + submitting supporting files (mostly notes on assigned videos). But when I open the gradebook in Speedgrader, the viewer window only shows the submitted files. It doesn't open with the student's post and I don't see any way to close or minimize the submitted file in the viewer window itself (see below). If I open each individual assignment in Speedgrader, it does show the students' posts; but when I click through from one student to the next, or select an individual student within Speedgrader, the view defaults to the submitted file preview.

Hi @kansasmagic, one of our instructors reported this issue as well. We were able to see the student's discussion posts (instead of an attached image) after refreshing the submission page in SpeedGrader. We opened a ticket with Instructure. They are aware of the issue and advise to refresh the page as well until they can apply a fix.

@kansasmagic How exactly did you set up the activity where they submit supporting files? Is that a file upload assignment or are they just attaching those in discussion threads?

This SpeedGrader screenshot looks as if this is just a file upload assignment. If that is the case, there would be a separate discussion forum set up. Is that forum set to be graded? If so, that would be a separate column in the Gradebook and would not show with the file uploads.

Thanks for following up. The assignment is structured as a "Discussion", but students are required to upload or embed documents/screenshots along with their discussion post.

My view of Speedgrader is inconsistent: For some students, I can see their discussion post in the viewer window, and the submitted files/images are linked under the submission details on the right side. I can click through and open the uploaded files without any problem, close them, and return to the discussion view.

For other students, the viewer window only shows an uploaded file instead of their discussion post, and does not give me the option to close or minimize the file preview. If I open the original discussion, I can see their posts, but for some reason they won't open in Speedgrader. It's not a big problem, just a little time consuming.

My main question is why I don't have the option to close or minimize the file preview in the viewer window.

I work for a college in the Instructional Design and Technology department and have had multiple tickets submitted by faculty with this issue. I put in a ticket with Canvas Support, and while the issue has been escalated to their level 2 support team, they are still looking into the reason this is happening and working to find a fix.

I kind of wonder if this has something to do with the upcoming UI update, even though it doesn't have anything to do with UI, we've noticed a number of problems that have occurred as they slowly make this update that I wouldn't expect to be related either, but which do indeed seem to be related to major coding changes that must be going on in the background. This last paragraph is just speculation

Just so CANVAS knows - me and some other instructors are also having an issue with this. I'm giving them the solution stated above to refresh the Speedgrader page to show submissions. Thanks!

We are having this same issue with the new enhanced SpeedGrader turned on ( it is being enforced on the next beta release so we turned it on early as we just started our summer term). We will submit a ticket, but this is frustrating, these enhancements, shouldn't go backwards for the faculty experience!

For anyone experiencing this or other issues, I'd encourage you to contact Canvas support to get the issue(s) officially documented. Posting here in the community is great for peer to peer help and confirmation, but will not get the issue on Instructure's radar to investigate and fix, only Canvas support can do that. The more people who contact support about a particular issue the better, as it helps to show the impact and prioritize work on fixes.

Yes as I mentioned, we submitted a ticket, but it is good to know, when you post to the community or even as you are investigating issues that faculty bring to you, that this is not an isolated issue with your institution. So agreed, to contacting support and I would add to refer to the community page in your ticket, as they can then see lots of schools are replicating this issue. Our ticket ( response) says it was fixed yesterday, but we are not seeing the fix in live.
