Mastery Path not working in New Quizzes

Question

We are now made to use New Quizzes, but the Mastery Path is not working.

First of all, migration does not migrate over the Mastery Path settings, so I have to reset it manually.

I've now set the Mastery Path for Quiz X to direct to Subquiz A and Subquiz B depending on scores, but both student view and enrolled student account can view, access and submit for A and B without even going through X.

How do I resolve this?

Yes, I believe the score range setup is the problem here.

The issue with Subquiz B's range is that it's set to "1 pts to 0 pts" — and Mastery Paths score ranges need to go lower bound to upper bound (smallest to largest). A range of "1 to 0" is inverted and won't trigger correctly, which explains the inconsistent behavior

Try this and see if it works:

* Go to the Mastery Paths settings for Quiz X.
* Find the score range tied to Subquiz B.
* Change the lower bound from 1 to 0, so it reads 0 pts to 0 pts.
* Save the settings.

It did manage to hide A and B from view now but didn't seem to solve the problems.

From time to time I get the option to select A or B. Or, I am able click Next and go to A or B based on my scoring, but am unable to view it on module page.

I wonder if it's the scoring setting that I got wrong?

Students are supposed to get directed to A if they score 1, while they are directed to B when they score 0. But in Mastery Paths, A is listed as 1 pts to 1 pts, while B is listed as 1 pts to 0 pts.

Hey there! Mastery Paths are such a great way to personalize learning, but they definitely have a few "hidden" quirks when you're first getting started! It’s a common hurdle to have everything set up, only to realize the subquizzes are showing up a bit earlier than intended.

Here is the breakdown of why this is happening and the quick fix to get those paths locked down.

Why: In Canvas, items are assigned to Everyone by default. Even after adding them to a Mastery Path, that default setting stays active, allowing all students to see the subquizzes immediately.

The Fix: For each conditional quiz (Subquiz A and Subquiz B):

* Go to Modules and click the Mastery Paths link on Quiz X.
* In each score range, click the options menu next to the subquiz and select Edit. It'll open in a new tab.
* In the Assign field, click the X next to "Everyone" to remove it.
* Click the text field and select Mastery Paths.
* Click Save, then Continue past the section warning.

Once both subquizzes are assigned to Mastery Paths instead of Everyone, students will only see the one that corresponds to their Quiz X score, and only after Quiz X is graded.

To Verify: Use the Student View after the fix to verify. Here, the Student shouldn't be able to see Subquiz A or B at all, since they haven't completed Quiz X yet. If they can still see them, double-check that the "Everyone" assignment was fully removed on both quizzes.
