Transferring from one course to another

Hello

I have a student in a course that is transferring from one course to another.

The courses are the same in essence but one is slightly newer with some improvements.

The student has completed some work in the original course, how can I transfer them to the new course (and section) including their previously completed work?

Hello @HinnaKhan - we've resolved this issue a few ways and it requires collaboration with both instructors (if the courses have different instructors). One method is to ask the student to repost the work. This depends on module settings, due dates, etc. Another approach for your Canvas admin is to make use of the Act As permission. In that capacity the Canvas admin downloads work from course #1 and reposts to course #2 as the student where able. And if something such as an available until date prevents this, then act as the instructor and use the assignment submit for student feature.

The short answer here is that there is no quick and easy way to transfer student work/results from one course to another.

Canvas doesn’t offer an automatic way to migrate an individual student’s completed work or grades from one course/section into another. However, a simple albeit manual method is to export that student’s gradebook data from the original course and then enter their grades into the new course/section. To do that:

Go to Grades in the original course.
Use Gradebook → Individual Gradebook (or filter by the student) and export the data.
In the new course/section, manually input the corresponding scores for each assignment the student previously completed.

This ensures the student keeps credit for their completed work even though the courses don’t directly transfer grades between sections.
