Hide Respondus Lockdown Browser from Course Menu

Greetings,

Our institution has recently acquired Canvas LMS and I had a question related to the third-party tool Respondus Lockdown Browser.

When the tool is installed at the institution level, the tool requires one of the placements to be in the course menu. Is there a way to restrict from this tool being automatically added to the course menu and instead have instructors go into the course settings to enable it?

The reason for my question is the end goal to be that this tool is not visible in the course menu across the entire institution.

@13lauralopez Welcome to Canvas LMS and the Community! I'm not super familiar with how Respondus works as an LTI, but you may want to look at @JamesSekcienski's post here and see if any of these solutions will work with the Respondus LTI. Hope this helps!

Hi @13lauralopez.

My institution uses Respondus LockDown Browser and the course navigation placement is the main placement that is used.

If you look at the API for the LDB external tool, you will see that its visibility is "admins". I cannot find the specific documentation but Instructure/Canvas considers the "admins" permissions within a course as "course admins". Course admins are LMS admins and teachers. I believe that TAs might fall under that as well but I am not entirely certain.

In short, if you use the "View as Student" feature, "LockDown Browser" does not appear.

If you want to disable "LockDown Browser" by default, you would need to use either course templates or modify its visibility using the Tabs API.
