Bimonthly section scheduling

How do I add a student to a class section on a bi-monthly basis?  Or, for only specific dates in a month?

I want to keep him enrolled in only one course/class.  Is this possible to do.  He is currently in a group of two students and I only want him to attend bi-monthly.

Some of this depends on the permissions that your Canvas Administrator allows you to have as an instructor. So the first conversation is most likely with that individual. However we have lots of guides on this topic and it's absolutely something you can do. Here is the teacher/faculty guides on Courses and Sections.

You can use a combination of course sections and assignment settings to achieve the results desired1. Create a Specific Section for the Student

The key to managing this student's access is to put him in his own section. This allows you to differentiate assignments and due dates just for him without affecting the other students.

• Go to your course's Settings.

• Click the Sections tab.

• In the "Add a new section" field, give the section a clear name, like "Student's Name - Bi-monthly" and click the +Section button.

2. Move the Student into the New Section

Once the section is created, you need to move the student from the general course section into this new one.

• Go to the People tab in your course navigation.

• Find the student's name.

• Click the three vertical dots (⋮) next to their name and select Edit Sections.

• In the pop-up window, click Browse and select the new section you just created.

• Click Update to save the changes.

3. Manage Assignments and Due Dates

With the student in their own section, you can now control which assignments they can access and on which dates.

• When creating or editing an assignment, quiz, or discussion, scroll down to the "Assign" box.

• By default, it will be assigned to "Everyone." Click the "X" next to "Everyone" to remove that.

• In the "Assign to" field, start typing the name of the student's new section. Select it from the list.

• Set the Due Date, Available from, and Available until dates to match the specific bi-monthly or one-off dates you want the student to participate.

• Click +Add to create another assignment entry for other students, and assign it to the remaining sections (or "Everyone Else" if that option is available). This ensures the other students are not affected.

• Repeat this process for each assignment you want to give the student, setting the availability dates to align with the days he should be active in the class.
