Translation during LockDown Browser

Question

Hello,

Is there any way to translate text into another language in the LockDown browser? I have a L1 Language speaker in my class who is struggling to complete quizzes within the allotted time due to having to use a Spanish-English dictionary for translation.

Hi @AylaWilk,

I do not know of any way to do this but I can provide a general process of accommodating the student but it would involve not requiring Respondus LockDown Browser for them.

* duplicate the quiz (consult with your Canvas team for assistance with this or with Canvas Support)
* rename the duplicate something else so that you know its purpose and assign it to just that student (this will be helpful for the future because you will probably want to delete it)
* excuse the student from the original copy of the quiz so that it does not count against them
* do not configure LockDown Browser for it
* if your institution has one, you could consult with a Testing Center or Educational/Disability Support Services area (for academic accommodations) to find out if they are able to proctor the student (providing them with a list of items that are allowed
* a Testing Center or Educational/Disability Support Services area might have software installed on their computers that assist with translating webpages (whether an entire page or selected texted)

Unfortunately, LockDown Browser doesn’t support features like translation tools, as it’s designed to restrict access to other programs and resources during a quiz. This means your student wouldn’t be able to use a Spanish-English dictionary within the browser. To support the student, you could consider creating a translated version of the quiz in Spanish if possible or extending the quiz time through Canvas to give them more time for translation.

Alternatively, if school policies allow, you might explore different assessment methods that don’t require LockDown Browser, which could accommodate their language needs more effectively.
