Can't view Discussion Posts in SpeedGrader

Question

I am in Speedgrader, trying to grade student posts and replies to a Discussion. In the past, I could see all of the students replies & original post right in Speedgrader, but now it is not appearing. I have to tediously search each student's name in a different tab, read their response, then go back to another tab and enter their grade into the rubric. Is there some setting I can change to help bring back the summary in Speedgrader that it tells me I should see (but don't)? For reference, there are only 30 students in the course.

Hello @LauraR14937519 - As @Hildi_Pardo mentions in the thread, there can be additional factors that may cause the student posts to not show. I generated a rather extensive list of troubleshooting steps to try to assist. Given your comment that the SpeedGrader options were already selected correctly but discussion content still would not load, I would investigate the group discussion setup and student group assignments first.

Troubleshooting Checklist

Step 1: Confirm the Discussion Is a Graded Discussion

* Open the discussion settings.
* Verify that Graded Discussion is enabled.
* Confirm the discussion is associated with an assignment and point value.

If the discussion was intended to be a Group Discussion but groups were never assigned

Canvas generally expects group memberships to exist before students begin posting. If students have already participated, assigning them to groups afterward does not automatically redistribute or recreate their discussion posts within the newly created group discussions.

In that situation, the instructor may find that:

* Existing posts remain associated with the original discussion context.
* Students cannot see prior posts in their new group discussion.
* SpeedGrader may not display discussion content as expected if the discussion configuration and submission records no longer align.

What can be done after the fact?

Option 1: Leave the discussion as is

If students have already completed the activity, this is often the safest option.

* Grade the discussion in its current state.
* Avoid converting or substantially changing group settings after participation starts.
* Create properly configured group discussions for future activities.

Option 2: Create groups and start fresh

If the discussion is still early in the term:

* Create the groups.
* Create a new group discussion.
* Have students repost within their assigned groups.

This provides the cleanest data structure for Canvas and SpeedGrader.

Option 3: Check whether students were added to groups after posting

If the discussion was already configured as a group discussion:

* Verify every student belongs to a group.
* Verify no students remain unassigned.
* Open the discussion as a student (using Student View or masquerade if available).
* Confirm posts appear within the appropriate group space.

A missing group assignment can sometimes cause discussion content not to appear where expected.

Step 4: Verify Student Participation

* Open the discussion directly (outside SpeedGrader).
* Search for the student.
* Confirm the student actually posted a discussion entry and/or replies.
* Verify the posts are visible and not deleted.
* Confirm posts appear in the expected group discussion if groups are being used.

Step 5: Test Another Student Submission

* In SpeedGrader, move to several different students.
* Determine whether:* No students load.
* Some students load.
* Only one student fails to load.

* Document any patterns.

Step 6: Rule Out a Browser Issue

Test the same discussion in:

* Chrome
* Edge
* Firefox
* Safari (not my favorite)

Also test:

* Private/Incognito browsing mode
* Browser cache cleared
* Browser extensions temporarily disabled

If discussion content appears in another browser, the issue is likely local to the browser rather than Canvas.

Step 7: Check for Enhanced Discussions or Recent Configuration Changes

Review whether:

* The discussion was converted from a regular discussion to a group discussion.
* Group assignments were modified after students began posting.
* The discussion settings were changed after participation started.
* The course recently adopted the newer Discussions interface.

Unexpected behavior can occur when discussion configuration changes after students have already submitted content.

Step 8: Compare with Another Discussion

* Open a different graded discussion in the same course.
* Open a graded discussion in another course.
* Determine whether SpeedGrader loads discussion content normally elsewhere.

Results:

* Works elsewhere → likely a discussion-specific issue.
* Fails everywhere → likely a browser, account, or system issue.

Step 9: Check Browser Console for Errors

If comfortable with browser developer tools:

* Press F12.
* Select Console.
* Reload SpeedGrader.
* Look for:* Failed API requests
* Permissions errors
* JavaScript errors
* Network timeouts

Capture screenshots of any errors for support.

Step 10: Escalate with Required Information

If the issue persists, gather:

* Course ID
* Discussion URL
* Whether the discussion is graded
* Whether it is a group discussion
* Browser and version
* Screenshots of SpeedGrader
* Screenshots of discussion settings
* Whether the issue affects all students or only specific students
* Any console error messages

This information will significantly shorten troubleshooting time for Canvas administrators or Instructure Support.

Hi @LauraR14937519  — did you make the Discussion a "Graded Discussion"?      You mentioned Groups — that is another set of variables.

Thank you, Jeff! I have found that options menu, but even with that selected nothing loads or shows up. Is it because students were not put into Groups yet when the discussion began? I have future Discussions set into groups of 10 students, so I am hoping that will help solve my issue?
