Not able to remove account admins...

Question

Hello Canvas Universe,

I've recently inherited the canvas coordinator role at my school, and one of the things I am doing from my audit is cleaning up admin account users and roles for the root account, but I'm at a roadblock. I don't have the option to remove users assigned as Academic Dean from the account. The "X" is not there….

Is there something I am missing? What questions should I be asking my school about how Academic Deans were added?

Also, I am not seeing this role in the permissions section either.

Hi Jeff,

So I recently learned that the role was created in relation to Grade Guardian, a tool we are no longer using. I also have admin access to the root account, as I was able to remove other users who had admin access. Sounds like I might need to reach out to Grade Guardian?

@80791783 - There is not anything above root in Canvas, so if you cannot remove those users it usually means the role is being controlled outside your current permissions. I would check whether that Academic Dean role is managed through SIS or a central Canvas admin team, and also confirm you have full permission to add and remove admins at the root level. If the role does not appear in Permissions, it is likely a custom or restricted role that you cannot edit directly. For example, is the school part of a linked account with multiple Canvas instances?
