SpeedGrader has no option to excuse unsubmitted assignments

Question

In SpeedGrader, on submitted assignments, I can hit the pencil icon at top right to change the submission's status, like from None to Late:

For unsubmitted assignments, I am presented no such option:

This is not helpful. This student has a zero due to a documented medical situation, so I want to excuse it. I should see that pencil icon.

In case it matters, I have the system set to auto-grade unsubmitted assignments as zeros.

I realize I can go to the gradebook and chase down this one grade and fix it there. The problem is the inconsistent display of that status-edit option within SpeedGrader.

As of right now, the enhanced SpeedGrader will become the default and only one available to everyone in Mid-July.

Thank you. After enabling Performance and Usability Upgrades for SpeedGrader, I now have what I need!

Man, that option makes SpeedGrader so much better in other ways! Why is this just not part of mainstream SpeedGrader!?!?

@arencambre I'm sorry you are not seeing the pencil in the SpeedGrader for an assignment with no submission. In the short run, you can go to Grades and then put EX in the grade cell for this student on this assignment. That will apply the Excused status.

For a longer term solution, do you have the option in Settings on the Feature Options tab to enable Performance and Usability Upgrades for SpeedGrader? If so, that new version of the SpeedGrader has the feature you need.
