When the Instructure Community moved to a new platform late in 2025, some content ended up in different places. One of the biggest moves we noticed was that content for New Quizzes moved from having its own hub (called the New Quizzes Hub) into the main Canvas LMS area of the new platform. This change happened because New Quizzes has become something that many teachers and students use on a regular basis and is no longer just something being tried by early adopters. While it may make New Quizzes content slightly harder to locate immediately, the move could be viewed in a very positive light!
Essential New Quizzes ResourcesTo help with the community transition, we’d like to highlight some resources for New Quizzes that have been really valuable over the years. These resources might be slightly more challenging to find in the new community right now, so we hope this will provide a little extra visibility.
- FAQ: New Quizzes provides answers to common questions, reflecting the changes in New Quizzes features that have been added over time.
- The New Quizzes Adoption Toolkit has some curated information to assist with any phase of New Quizzes adoption, from early planning stages to full adoption.
- The Canvas Quizzes Feature Comparison is a handy side-side-by-side comparison of features available in Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes.
- The New Quizzes Quiz and Item Analysis has instructions on the reports available in New Quizzes, including the formulas used within the reports.
New Quizzes Highlights
Some of the great features New Quizzes has that Classic Quizzes does not are:
- Additional options for questions like varying points for multiple-choice answers and regular expressions for fill-in-the-blank questions
- Build on last attempt quizzes, where students only see questions there haven’t yet earned full points for on their next attempts
- Easier student accommodation options that can be set one time and applied to all New Quizzes in a course
- More granular question/feedback release options
The Big Takeaway - Ask Questions!
Moving from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes can be intimidating, even though the transition may not be as hard as it first appears in most cases. Please feel free to post questions about New Quizzes in the Canvas LMS Question Forum. That area contains all of the questions that were in the former New Quizzes Hub forum, so you may find some of your questions have already been answered if you search that area.
The Instructure Community is full of knowledgeable users, many who love to share their experience and help others. Both of us have benefitted from knowledge shared by others here in many areas, especially New Quizzes. We hope this post will help everyone find the resources they need to embark on a transition to New Quizzes when the time is right for you or your school/institution.
About The Authors and Our Experience with New Quizzes
Chris Casey
UM-Dearborn Director of Digital Education and Instructure Community Coach
@Chris is the Director of Digital Education at UM-Dearborn. UM-Dearborn is a metropolitan campus located right outside of Detroit, serving a diverse population of students from a variety of backgrounds, and has been using Canvas as the single campus learning management system since 2013.
UM-Dearborn began piloting New Quizzes soon after it became generally available years ago, but put that pilot on pause because of some early issues. As new quizzes continued to mature and add a lot of valuable features, the pause was listed, and in 2022 a plan was crafted to move fully to new quizzes by May 2025, disabling classic quiz creation at that time. A 2-year communication and transition plan was announced and completed successfully on time, meaning all UM-Dearborn courses from Summer 2025 forward have utilized only New Quizzes.
Greg Beyrer
Cosumnes River College Distance Education Coordinator and Professor of History and Instructure Community Coach
@Greg is the distance education coordinator and a professor of history at Cosumnes River College in California. They have been using Canvas since 2017, when CRC joined the Online Education Initiative for California’s community colleges. CRC is part of a four-college district that uses the same instance with separate sub-accounts for each college.
At CRC, New Quizzes has been available as an option but without any specific plan to disable classic quizzes. Decisions about feature options are made by a team of faculty coordinators from each college, and balancing multiple interests means that a decision about enforcing feature options is not discussed until Instructure announces an enforcement date. Individual faculty thus have the freedom to enable feature options, and awareness of New Quizzes is communicated through college-wide training and newsletters.
