New Quizzes – Unable to manually assign score in SpeedGrader when there is no submission

Hi everyone,

We have encountered an issue with New Quizzes and wanted to confirm whether this is expected behavior or if we are missing a setting.

When using SpeedGrader in New Quizzes, instructors are unable to manually assign a score if the student has no submission. The score field does not allow manual entry when the student did not attempt the quiz.

However, when the quiz is built using Classic Quizzes, instructors are able to manually enter a score in SpeedGrader even without a submission.

We are aware of the option to automatically apply a default grade to missing submissions. Unfortunately, that solution does not work for us because:

It applies more broadly than needed.

Some instructors prefer to manually assign grades case by case.

Assigning grades directly in the Gradebook is also not an option for us, since we have institutional controls that require grading to be done exclusively through SpeedGrader.

Has anyone found a workaround for this in New Quizzes?
Is this a known limitation or planned improvement?

I believe we can blame the LTI integration part of new quizzes for the lack of ability - lets just always blame the integration.

If there is no submission, there is no grading you can do in speedgrader for new quizzes as of now; however, if there is an attempt (submission) for the new quiz, then you have the ability to grade questions that need it (think essay questions) and access to fudge points, all of which can adjust the manually graded score given.
If there is no submission or if you want to just put grades in, you can do this straight in the "grades" area of your course (gradebook). Just find the column for that new quiz and enter them to the corresponding student.
*you can also open that little mini-speedgrader in the gradebook by clicking on a student and clicking that little box icon. (I like this because I can just click the arrow and go to the next student, while staying in the desired assignment - instead of being diligent with matching up the column and row for the student I want to enter grades for next)
