I find that when I am grading in speedgrader, I often want to send a student a message. Is there any way to do it directly. That is not go to the inbox and go through the five steps to send an message?
Hi @ecass …
There is no interface like the Canvas Inbox available from within the SpeedGrader, and there is no link that would take you to the Inbox from the SpeedGrader. However, I am curious, is there a reason that you wouldn't use the "Assignment Comments" box on the right side of the SpeedGrader to communicate with each of your students about a given assignment? To me, this seems like a better way to keep all communication contained in the assignment itself for each of your students rather than using another Canvas tool such as the "Inbox".

If you didn't want to use the "Assignment Comments" box in the assignment within the SpeedGrader, I suppose that you could have a separate tab open in your web browser. Then, you could navigate to the "People" page of your course. Click on the name of a student, and a slide-out tray will appear on the right side of your screen. Next to the student's name in the slide-out tray, you should see an envelope icon. Click on that icon to open up a small window where you can compose a message to the student. See the section on "View Context Card" in this Guide:

I hope this information will be of some help to you. Sing out if you have any questions.
Hi @ecass, Submission comments is great tool for communicating feedback pertinent to the assessment being marked When the submission comments are released, the student will be notified and able to engage in the assignment feedback area (driving continous feedback). This is great if you're looking to confirm understanding or provide additional insights for a final mark. From the gradebook however, you are able to message to inboxes via "message students who" and choose the audience to receive the communication. This is mostly used for bulk communication to students in a course who meet a consistent criteria. There is also the option to send students a message once you click on the user (as described below). Good luck with your Instructure adventure!
@Chris_Hofer Both of those features are great. There is a fairly common "mistake" 😲my students make which is to hand in a blank Word document. I have assignments where they have to answer questions on a Word document. I would like a really easy way to email them and tell them so. Or that they missed 5 questions or that I want them to try again. The People Tab idea is a good one and faster than the Inbox route. Chatgpt suggested this, and although imaginary, a good idea.
Click the student’s name at the top of SpeedGrader.
That opens the student context card. Click the envelope icon or View Profile. Their email is listed there.
ChatGPT was sorta right - but the student context card is not accessed from the SpeedGrader. That workflow happens from the Gradebook.
ChatGPT is often sorta right! FOund what you meant. Click on name in Gradebook and it pops up to right.
@ecass and @LauraCira …
Yes, if you click on a student's name via the "Gradebook", you'll see a similar slide-out tray on the right side of your screen with an envelope icon next to the student's name (just like the interface via the "People" page). So, you can access this either place. 😀
On another note, I also encourage you try the Pandabot (Our generative AI tool) recently added to the Instructure Community (bottom right hand corner of your screen). This is a great place to start your initial search! But the community is great way to provide a more nuanced response as it relates to your region, market and role. Viva la Panda!
I am trying to download a single submission that has been annotated by a grader using the API. Does anyone know how to do this? I am using Python using the canvasapi and requests libraries to query the preview_url in the submission attachments. import requests from urllib.parse import urljoin preview_url =…
Is there a trick to importing a rubric when using the Canvas rubric template? I download the csv file and fill in the Canvas Rubric template from the Enhanced Grading feature and nothing happens when I try to upload it. It only shows the file name, but not it's size. Yes, it is still a CSV. I've tried removing all symbols…
With the new SpeedGrader UI, we are seeing student names appear in the page title even when the “Hide student names” setting is enabled. When using Classic Quizzes, there is no option within the quiz settings to enable anonymous grading, so we rely on instructors using the hide student names setting in SpeedGrader to…
Speedgrader chaning file name when being downloaded. Speedgrader: When downloading a submitted assignment, the file name is being changed to an unrecognizable name — (Student's actual name was part of the file name — changed for privacy.) Ideas???
We are all familiar with the standard Course Calendar, where assignment due dates are automatically added. However, at my institution, we structure our assignments as Challenges that develop over a period of time, rather than just a single deadline. Currently, the calendar only highlights the "end point." It would be a…
