Purpose of New Status Box in SpeedGrader? How is intended to be used, and why might it be a better process for faculty?

Hello Everyone,

I received this comment/complaint from one of our faculty about the changes to the Status box in SpeedGrader. What has been the reaction from your faculty? How might this change be a better process for faculty?

Many of you who teach online may have noticed an update in Canvas that is adding steps and time to evaluate student discussion board contributions. .

One change is the addition of a new Status box in SpeedGrader, which includes a dropdown menu with options Excused, Missing, Late, or None. I would appreciate clarification on the purpose of this feature and guidance on how it is intended to be used in our grading practices.

The prior system automatically assigned late or missing to the assignment, and I could always modify that to excused if I so chose.
Now Faculty have to select this for every grade entered for each student.
If you use one of the settings for discussions this means you have to enter it twice [or more] on each student's submitted work for each discussion..

The default is none and I just leave as is unless I want to mark the assignment as Excused Missing or Late. IF the assignment is late it is noted as such and I can easily override it if I am not going to count the assignment as late for some reason.

This should still be the case if the assignment, discussion, or quiz has a due date. If there is no due date, the default status will be None, and instructors can manually update it as needed. If this isn’t working as expected, I recommend submitting a support ticket so the team can investigate further.

Could you clarify which setting you’re referring to? I tested discussions both with and without due dates, and the status behavior appears to function the same way as it does for the other assignments mentioned above.
