Why did the post date in the discussion forum (in speed grader) change from an actual date to a description (ex. 3 weeks ago)?
@Katherine_A_2026 @clpatter @DeniseJohnson6971234 @stewartk1 @MichaelHill80737649 @TWauzynski_62326139 Thank you all for sharing this feedback! Our team will prioritize adding the precise timestamp (with the date/time of the submission) back in.
I'm seeing the same thing. My assignments require postings on different days and I can no longer see the actual dates students posted their responses.
This is causing confusion for our instructors as well. Our discussions also require postings on different days so not being able to see the full timestamp for when things were posted is an issue.
This is a really frustrating change that has made it much more difficult to grade, for exactly the reason MichaelHill above mentioned. I've spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out if there's a way to change it back in Settings, but I cannot find a way. I hate this new change. It's awful.
I agree with all of these comments - I'm having the same issue. This change just put a tremendous obstacle in the middle of my discussion grading workflow. I'm now spending hours creating spreadsheets for each class and manually searching discussions to determine weekly participation. This is not a sustainable work-around.
I don't know a way to revert it back, but I do have a workaround. When you're in the Speedgrader, hover over the description (ex. Last week) and you'll see the time stamp.
Thank you! that's not 100% better, but it helps
Hi @YasiAfsharnive,
Thanks for the prompt reply here! As a Canvas admin, I just want to stress what pretty much everyone has said here about dates. While relative dates sometimes look visually cleaner, they really are not specific enough for most educators as we're often dealing with deadlines and even seconds matter. I'd urge Instructure to use full date/timestamps whenever displaying that kind of info anywhere in Canvas (admin view, teacher view, discussions, assignments, grades, etc).

I agree with everything you said. Especially since we don't know how the "days ago" are being counted. For example, is yesterday really "one day ago" and the day before yesterday "2 days ago"? It's ambiguous and (like you said) "look visually cleaner, they really are not specific enough".
Is there an official case number, or action item associated with this? I mean, of your team prioritizing adding the precise timestamp (with the date/time of the submission) back in? Something I can reference besides this discussion post? Thank you,

Sure. Here's the case number #13544632
Is there an anticipated timeframe for this to be corrected? This is a major dissatisfier for our faculty. Thank you!
Our campus is starting to receive tickets about this as well. Our faculty are saying this is causing problems with grading and I too, have tried disabling the Performance enhancements for Speedgrader, not using checkpoints, etc. and the only "work around" I have been able to provide faculty is to roll their mouse over the "2 weeks ago" text to display the time/date, although some faculty are reporting that is not working for them (assuming it is a setting on their device). Please make fixing this a priority.
Thank you!
One of our instructors brought this to our attention and the only workaround I've been able to find is to hover the mouse over the descriptor to display date and time stamp. This fix needs to be made a priority.
I would also like to emphasize the importance of displaying full date and timestamp information within the discussion board. This is a critical issue for our faculty, and we have received multiple support tickets directly related to the recent change. While timestamps are technically available via hover, this approach is difficult to work with and raises accessibility concerns. I strongly urge you to reinstate full date and timestamp displays consistently across Canvas, including discussions, assignments, grades, and both instructor and admin views. Doing so would better support instructional accuracy, accessibility, and faculty workflow.
The hover over only works sometimes for me. Which makes it even more frustrating.
Hi @YasiAfsharnive!
Thank you so much for this update!
Do you know if the same changes will be reverted for Access Reports? I am asking because of case 13552432 that I submitted on Friday, January 30th.
-Doug
Thank you so much for this workaround! We were confused about this update as well and had a frustrated instructor complaining about it.
The same workaround also helps when viewing someone's access report in a course.
I don't have specifics on access reports. It looks like that case is marked 'completed' in salesforce so hoping the changes have been reverted!
It appears that it has been resolved because I now only see relative dates for entries less than 24 hours old (the way it used to be), although I have not received an update to the ticket and it shows as "On Hold" for me.
Until whatever change was reverted (and I do not have a screenshot of it) everything was appearing as relative dates.
Is there a trick to importing a rubric when using the Canvas rubric template? I download the csv file and fill in the Canvas Rubric template from the Enhanced Grading feature and nothing happens when I try to upload it. It only shows the file name, but not it's size. Yes, it is still a CSV. I've tried removing all symbols…
The Deploy Notes for yesterday showed that IgniteAI translations for Discussions, Announcements and Inbox were supposed to be Disabled/Locked, but there is an "Enable Translation" button available in our courses today. I'm the Canvas admin at our university, and I see that it is Disabled in the Feature Options Setting, so…
With the new SpeedGrader UI, we are seeing student names appear in the page title even when the “Hide student names” setting is enabled. When using Classic Quizzes, there is no option within the quiz settings to enable anonymous grading, so we rely on instructors using the hide student names setting in SpeedGrader to…
Speedgrader chaning file name when being downloaded. Speedgrader: When downloading a submitted assignment, the file name is being changed to an unrecognizable name — (Student's actual name was part of the file name — changed for privacy.) Ideas???
We are all familiar with the standard Course Calendar, where assignment due dates are automatically added. However, at my institution, we structure our assignments as Challenges that develop over a period of time, rather than just a single deadline. Currently, the calendar only highlights the "end point." It would be a…
