In Classic Quizzes, it is possible to display question-level feedback to students without manually grading an essay question on a quiz. Can this be enabled in New Quizzes?
Use Case: This feature is vital for practice quizzes that include essay questions along with other question types. We mix essay questions with other auto-grading question types, within a practice quiz that students can take multiple times (receiving different questions each time through the use of question banks), in courses that include hundreds of students. Without having to manually grade each practice quiz attempt, we want to provide an example essay response that students can use to check their own work.
Work-Arounds
I've tried three that are simply not good enough.
(1) Using the newly-available "Graded Survey" option in New Quizzes. These new surveys only include a handful of question types, cannot display correct answers (since they are survey questions without a correct answer), and cannot leverage Item Banks. Using this option would require sub-dividing each weekly practice quiz into two parts: Part A (Graded Survey with only essay questions) and Part B (all other question types that automatically grade). This makes the weekly practice quizzes less like the graded quizzes and increases the complexity for students.
(2) Enabling "Show custom feedback with results" in New Quizzes settings. This doesn't allow us to provide feedback dynamically based on the specific essay questions (from the Item Bank) the student saw on each attempt. We typically choose 2 of 12 essays, meaning we would need to provide samples of 12 essays! That's just too much to scroll past in order to see other feedback, and it is difficult to scroll back-and-forth between the custom feedback and the student's entry.
(3) Timing the availability of a Page or Announcement with sample essay responses. This increases the time distance between students comleting an essay and being able to check their work. It also requires changing availability windows to make sure students have the opportunity to check their work before completing the graded quiz.
I've come across several other posts from years past with similar or identical requests, but am currently unable to follow any of the links on those pages to be able to vote on functionality. So, I apologize if this isn't the right place for this post, but I'd love to know if there are other work-arounds or feature improvements planned for New Quizzes. (I don't see anything I can interpret as related to this on the Roadmap.) Thanks!
