Is it possible to set up a quiz (knowledge check) that students can not move on until they have completed the item.

I understand the initial question. And although I have built in pre-requisites, I would like the quiz to be taken and a set passing mark to be achieved (possibly) before the Student moves on to the next topic. I need to check their understanding, rather than prohibit them from moving on through the course.
