I have allocated 32 groups in a cohort, each with 3 or 4 members. How can I efficiently have class members self establish a numbered discussion group inside the Canvas Discussion menu function?
Go to the People tab and create Groups. You'll have to create the groups and move students into them. Once you've done that, you can keep using the same groups for the rest of the course.
Then when you create a new Discussion, you'll check the box to make it a Group Discussion. The students will then only see their group members' replies.
It's very easy to set all of this up.
Hello @DavidWNg
In addition to what @SusanNiemeyer has said, it sounds like you want the students to be able to make their own discussion posts within their groups. If that is the case, then you'll want to enable this feature within course settings:

Also this is a good resource for students if you are going to regularly have them do group work:

Our school uses Powerschool SIS. Recently, grades for some students aren't syncing over to Powerschool, but Canvas is saying the sync was successful. My grading categories match, the Sync to Powerschool box is checked, and due dates are entered and accurate. In a given assignment, some of the student's grades are syncing…
Please let me know if this is better posted in a different forum. Still learning the ropes of the Community! I'd love to see the option of an itemized sync for Blueprint courses. Many of our faculty make course updates throughout the semester for the next semester's courses, but don't necessarily want those updates to…
I have 9 years of Canvas courses listed and every time I have to import or share or add a rubric, etc., I have to scroll through more than 35 different (yet similarly named) courses. Can there be a way to have a Current Year only? Or published only section? Like, have another tab under, similar to when importing shared…
ETA: never mind! I had done my "testing" in the wrong quiz, which was a Classic Quiz quiz. I just tried again in the correct (migrated) new quiz, and I see now that the "file upload" question type DOES show the image in SG! — I rarely use Canvas quizzes, but am teaching a new asynch class this semester. I want students to…
