I'm testing whether Mastery Paths can be used to give students early access to an item based on their score, while making the same item available to everyone else on a later date.
Here is my setup:
- A 4-point assignment is the source for the Mastery Path.
- Students scoring 75–100% are assigned a Solutions item.
- The Solutions item has two Assign To groups:
- Mastery Paths: Available From August 3
- Everyone Else: Available From August 29
A student earned 3/4 (75%), and Canvas correctly processed the Mastery Path and added that student individually to the Solutions item's Assign To list.
However, the individual student assignment created by Mastery Paths had no Available From date. From the student's perspective, the Solutions item was still locked until August 29.
As a test, I manually added August 3 as the Available From date to the individual student assignment that Canvas had generated. The student immediately gained access to the Solutions item.
So it appears that Canvas is correctly assigning the student through Mastery Paths, but is not carrying the Mastery Paths Available From date into the individual assignment it generates. As a result, the student remains subject to the later Everyone Else availability date.
Is this expected Mastery Paths behavior, a known issue, or a bug? Is there another way to accomplish the following with a single conditional item?
Student meets Mastery Path threshold → early access
Everyone else → access automatically on a later date/time
