Is the R&D team at Canvas considering the support of 3D model file types? If so, which ones, if not, what might be the reason(s).

I am not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but you might want to add your comments to it and give it a star rating if it meets your needs.

Another way to allow 3D files to be submitted as assignments is to use the 'Text Entry' Submission type. This gives the students a blank canvas page to work on. Then you can show them how to get the embed for a 3D model from Tinkercad, Sketchfab, etc. and insert it into their assignment page.
This method doesn't allow the grader to add annotations like a pdf or word doc,,, but even if Canvas does begin supporting 3D file types, I doubt they will find a way to allow annotations.
