Create a canvas course not linked to a formal university course?

Hi Canvas community

 

As a professor (instructor), is it possible to create new Canvas courses to facilitate informal teaching and discussion with my six PhD students? 

 

I do not want the material to be part of any formal module, such as "ENVS444" (a module that I run at the moment).  I would like Powerpoint materials, Excel spreadsheets etc to be loaded up to the course.

 

Do you have any guidance to nurse me through such an initiative?

Hi @RichardWorden,

Assuming your institution has their own instance of Canvas, it will generally be up to your Canvas administrators (IT / eLearning / Digital Education department) to determine if they will create an unofficial course shell for you.  You could also create a course on your own in the free-for-teacher version of Canvas, but that may cause more confusion for your students, as they'd have two separate Canvas instances to log in to.
