As far as how to participate, you need to ask your instructor. It is likely your instructor has already posted instructions or a guide as to what is expected in discussion responses. Perhaps in the first discussion post, the syllabus, or maybe a rubric has been posted.
As far as how to use discussions in Canvas, you should review these tutorial pages.

When you are creating a quiz and/or also reviewing a quiz in Canvas after the class has taken it, the questions aren't numbered so after you get past the first few questions, there is no way to even tell what number you are on. Can someone change that?
