You did the right thing by adding a comment to the ongoing thread. Yes, that Idea Conversation has been open for quite some time. I also know that many instructors would find that feature valuable!
Unfortunately, I don't have an update I can share. However, because you commented on that thread, you'll receive updates when other Community Members and Instructure's Product Team leave comments. Those updates will be helpful to you as you track the progress. You can also watch the Canvas Product Roadmap The Q4 Roadmap should be released the first week of October.
