I have a course with combined sections, and I'd like to be able to limit students to interact with their own section only. I know how to do this for one student at a time (explained here), but I have over 500 students. Does anyone know if there's a way to do this in bulk?

If this is an institution-wide need, that setting can be added to the SIS enrollments.csv file or changed/set via the enrollments API. Using those is usually something only admins can do, which is why I mention the institution-wide thing (your admin team may or may not be willing to do it for your course). I guess that's a long winded way of saying that Yes it can be done. but depending on your role and institution settings, you may not be able to do it yourself.

I have a follow-up that you might be able to answer: do you happen to know if "interact with own section only" completely prevents someone from being able to see students in other sections? In particular, does it prevent the names of other-section students from showing up in the address book when composing a message in the inbox?

It does prevent people in other sections from showing up in the inbox as far as I can tell right now. I do think there is at least one caveat where it doesn't prevent from seeing people from other sections, and that is discussions (because someone in section A may reply to someone from section B).
