Course Analytics

A few months ago I discovered Course Analytics and I love all the data it provides! My favorite feature is the Weekly Online Activity page.

I decided to spread the information and build a quick 10 minute workshop for faculty on how to best navigate Course Analytics. I also included some screenshots and links to resources that they found helpful. The purpose behind this workshop was to introduce Course Analytics to faculty and help them better understand the data provided in each feature. This also gave me an opportunity to openly discuss with faculty ways they can utilize this data to help guide them make any adjustments to their course(s).

The presentation you created is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing it. I'd love to make a copy and tailor it for my school district, if that's okay with you.

I currently serve as the Canvas Root Admin for a K–12 district, but I was previously a virtual teacher. I relied heavily on Course Analytics to monitor student engagement, prepare for parent and student conferences, and even track attendance. It made my job significantly easier by helping me quickly identify how students were performing on individual assignments and in the course overall.

Because my students were virtual—and many I never met in person—Course Analytics became an invaluable tool for helping them cross the finish line and successfully complete the course. Many of our virtual students faced significant personal and academic challenges that made engagement difficult. Having access to that data allowed me to identify students who were disengaging, intervene early, and keep them connected to the course, even if they never attended a live class session.

In my current role, I use Admin Analytics to guide our Canvas professional development. The data helps us understand how teachers and students are using the platform, allowing us to tailor training to their actual needs. As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, my team of four relies heavily on this data to shape our workshops. We support not only Canvas but all digital learning tools across our district, so analytics play a huge role in our decision-making. Instead of guessing what users need, we can make data-informed decisions that help us provide timely, targeted, and effective support to our 100,000+ users.
