For our first week of the semester, I posted an introductory discussion and my students were supposed to hit "reply" and post their introductions under mine. They ended up posting separate discussions each at the bottom of the discussion page. Is there a way I can move the discussions under my discussions? I'm not sure what I did wrong to have this happen. Thank you for any help.
Hi @ProfessorSean This is a very common first-week Canvas moment, and unfortunately the answer is a bit unsatisfying.
Short answer: Nope. Canvas does not allow instructors to move student discussion posts and “re-nest” them under another post once they’ve been submitted.
Here’s what’s going on and what you can do instead.
In Canvas discussions, there are two different actions students can take:
If students clicked “Reply to Topic” instead of “Reply” under your introduction, Canvas treats those as entirely separate discussions. Once posted, Canvas does not provide a tool to drag, move, or merge posts into a different thread.
You didn’t do anything wrong, this is just how the interface behaves.
For future discussions, a couple of best practices help a lot:
Canvas discussions don’t support moving or re-threading posts after the fact. Once a student posts at the top level, that structure is locked in. Clear instructions and modeling are the only real safeguards.
Thank you so much for the reply. I'll be sure to pass it along. Have a great semester!

Our institution is setting up 9 institutional outcomes in Canvas. Several of our outcomes have multiple skill sets within the rubric. For example: Critical Reading – Skill Set A Critical Reading – Skill Set B Critical Reading – Skill Set C Our understanding is that Canvas Outcomes data reports can provide the overall/total…
I am just curiousas to why there is not a field to enter a description for an outcome at the account level? Or at least edit the rating when you attach/link an account level outcome to a rubric. When you create a new criterion for a rubric, you enter a decription for a rating, but for an account level outcome.
We use a pre- post- model to measure learning which requires student-question matching from two time periods. This requires exporting quiz data to CSV to do the analysis properly. (I can get into more detail if needed.) The New Quizzes Student Analysis CSV export has repeated blocks of ItemID then columns related to that…
Hello! A caution to my fellow Admins and support folks that Instructure updated their live-chat link (the one in the "(?) Help" menu, if you license their Support Chat service) fairly recently, but the old broken one is still online and appears as if it still functions. If someone hits the old link, after entering their…
