Do you have issues with Canvas Plagiarism Framework with Turnitin?

Hi,

For the past several months, my institution has had issues with Turnitin integrating through the Canvas Plagiarism Framework (CPF). I've had instructors contact me and tell me papers are not submitting through automatically, which requires them to select the resubmit button (sometimes multiple times to get it to go through). At times, the paper will not go through unless Canvas Support or Turnitin Support intervenes (I also can't get them to talk to each other for some reason, so I play the middleman).

When I get an issue resolved, I'm not told what happened, just that they "pushed it through" with no indication of what happened.

Has anyone else experienced this issue with CPF? I also contacted our CSM, and they were not able to help me either.

We're all just frustrated that it doesnt' seem to work half the time, now.

Hi @erik_gustafson,

While I can't currently comment about Turnitin since we don't use them, I can comment on the Plagiarism Framework with a different vendor… I think we've only has one single issue in the past 3 months where a plagiarism score wasn't generated and displayed. It seems like it was caused by something in the file the plagiarism scanner didn't like, so it wasn't a fault of the framework/Canvas at all. So with that being said, I'd probably focus more on the Turnitin side of things being the cause of the issue, but it really is hard to say with certainty (maybe there's something particular to your setup or AWS region/cluster causing the issue).

I hope your experience with a different vendor at least helps you a bit.

We have experienced this intermittently. As @Chris said it is likely related to Turnitin performance.

Turnitin is known to be slow or delayed in generating Similarity Reports during peak assessment times due to the demands on their system. The time taken to generate Similarity Reports can also vary based on factors like whether it's a first-time submission or resubmission (especially with the common 24-hour delay after 3 submissions), the length of the paper and/or format.

I certainly sympathize with the complexity of troubleshooting issues that span multiple integrated systems - our students and staff don't care who sorts issues out they just want things to work!
