Assign an assignment to ONLY a sub-set of a group

Hello,

I believe this question may have been answered before and the answer was "no", so I want to confirm the answer is still "no":

I have an assignment
I only want some of the groups in my class (not sections) to do that assignment

How can I do that?

Currently the "Assign To:" allows you to select ONLY sections or individual students, but the fact that we went into the trouble of creating students groups is not used.

This should be a basic feature in an LMS like Canvas - that groups get different assignments, and it should not have you "manually" create the groups when doing an "Assign To:".

If it is still a "no" - does anyone know if there is an open request to turn this into a "yes"?

Hi there @alvarso_uw ,

You cannot use the assign to feature to assign assignments to specific groups. However, you can still assign an assignment to a course group. Do understand that this applies to a group set, so you'd only want to assign students to a group under that group set that you want to have access the assignment.

In addition to the info Noah provided to you, I wanted to let you know about a new-ish Canvas feature called Differentiation Tags, which really fits what you're asking about. You can find more some basic info about differentiation tags at How do I create and manage Differentiation Tags as an instructor? - Instructure Community. Differentiation tage are similar to groups, but are really made for a scenario like yours where you're trying to have a certain population of students students work individually on an assignment, vs groups which are meant to have students collaborating together on work. Your school/institution Canvas team does need to turn differentiation tags on, so if you don't see the option in your course you could reach out to them.

I would lead towards using differentiation tags and they were the first option that popped into my head.

After following the guidance in https://community.instructure.com/en/kb/articles/660970 , you would then follow the guidance in https://community.instructure.com/en/kb/articles/660688 to do the actual assigning.
