Why don't missing grades automatically get changed to late when I enter them?

Whenever a student turns in late work I have to manually change the grade from missing to late even after I enter a grade. It automatically changes it if I use speedgrader, but not when I am at the gradebook.

When I enter my pile of late work at the end of the week it doesn't make sense to go to each speedgrader option individually so it becomes a lot of busy work to clickthrough the grading sidebar for each assignment.

Am I missing a setting somewhere that would make this change for me?

Based on the comments in that question, the differences are intended (even if it is not what is expected or desired).

Allow Observers to View Instructor Comments
It would be very beneficial for observers (parents) if they could view instructor comments. If they had access to this information, they could better understand the grading of individual assignments and better understand the errors that their student made.
