Using OneDrive 1.1 Integration to submit an assignment that matches the "docx" restriction fails wit

Hello,

We have several students trying to use OneDrive 1.1 LTI Integration to submit an assignment. The files match the "docx" restriction but it fails with error "invalid submission file type". The instructor indicates this has worked in the past. Is anyone else seeing this issue? Is there a fix?

We're seeing this as well with the docx restriction. Removing the file type restriction allows you to upload the file, so it doesn't appear to be an issue with the file itself as much the restriction functionality.

We've noticed this issue in our institution as well. As @al0907 mentioned, removing the file type restriction should get the student(s) going in the meantime.

However, my best recommendation is to submit a case to Canvas Support if you haven't already. I've just done so, and I've linked them to this thread, so hopefully they'll have eyes on this soon if they don't already!

We had a few tickets, one that I created and at least one from a faculty member. I believe a student also submitted one but I can't find it right now. I also contacted accountservices. Unfortunately, no one is really listening and all tickets are closed. Also, I found the 1.3 LTI for OneDrive does not solve this issue, so that makes me think it's on the Canvas side.

My next step is to attend the Microsoft LTI office hours meeting and see if others there have any suggestions as well. And yup, removing the restriction or having the students download/upload is a workaround.

Just to log this here - we're also having this issue and are currently in the process of raising a ticket.

I've been working with Microsoft to resolve this issue. We upgraded to LTI 1.3 but that didn't correct the issue. Since it is in two different LTIs and gives the same error message, I'm wondering if it's a Canvas issue. Microsoft has indicated submitting an assignment via OneDrive is not supported in the new LTI but it is clearly an option in the JSON.

Has anyone had more luck?

@Justin_Reynolds the response to our ticket (so far) is that Canvas engineering fixed the issue in Assignment Enhancements (suggesting that yes, it is a Canvas issue) - but have not implemented a fix in the 'current / classic' submission workflow.

They basically advise:

"Switch over to Assignment Enhancements" - no, not in the middle of a term, not without testing and consultation, and it's not right for us now - not least because of the issues reported in the User Group Forum (and we have enough change going on right now)

"Remove file type restrictions from the assignment" - no, they're there for a reason.

"Have students download the files they would like to submit to their device then upload the files directly in Canvas" (i.e., as a File Upload instead of submitting the files through the Office 365 LTI) - no, we offer submission through the Office 365 LTI as a backup submission route when the File Upload option fails (which it does). So, that doesn't solve our problem really?

So this stopped being an issue for some reason, but has cropped up again. I'm wondering if any ever received word on how to fix it. We just started this semester so, similar to @james_trueman we're stuck until this is fixed.

Of course, with the new Microsoft LTI coming out to replace the current one, we will eventually upgrade, but it hasn't been officially released and we can't do anything until the semester ends.
