Hi Canvas Community,
Has anyone tried or experienced configuring SSO for 3rd party or external set of users using this How do I configure third-party authentication prov... - Instructure Community - 225 (canvaslms.com)?
Our experience was not straight forward and had to do manual intervention on our end in SIS before the external users are able to log in on their premise via SSO.
Was that your case as well? Appreciate any experiences you can share. Thank you.
Hi @grayat,
We use SAML authentication for our university users and it's really been pretty painless since we set it up years ago.
I notice your question mentions third-party/external users though, which is not necessarily the same as things would be for normal school/university Canvas users. Our sister campus uses a third-party social media login SSO provider for external users, and I don't think they had much trouble setting that up. Can you elaborate on what you were trying to accomplish and what kind of issues you ran in to? I think things like this may be very school/institution and provider specific. Also, unless you're using just-in-time provisioning, the users have to exist in Canvas before they'd be able to log in through SSO, which I know has tripped some people up before.
Looking forward to hearing back from you with more details.

Apologies for the very delayed response. It's now working for our clients' SSO. Actually it's more on their Azure side of set up that can be tricky sometimes because there may be a couple of parameters that can be missed in the in configuration. All we had to do on our side is add the SAML authentication and then provide the correct URL to the client.
Thanks @chriscas for your response.
I teach middle school and my students have recently discovered the ability to play the "what-if" game with grades. They are now obsessed and are playing with it all the time. For the preservation of their sanity I would like to turn it off but don't want to hide their course grade. Is there a way to do so? PLEASE HELP!!…
Hello, we are new to Canvas this school year and have encountered a roadblock. I’m curious whether any other K–12 schools here are experiencing the same issue or have found a solution. We have several high school teachers who use total points with weight and adjust their weights midyear. Our courses are set up as a single…
I'm not sure that this is the right place to post about this, but I was wondering if anyone has a fix for how the scroll bar for the entire page covers the scroll bar for just a document viewed in Canvas. The scroll bar for a document will stay visible until one attempts to interact with it, at which point the bar for the…
Hi There, We are in the process of transitioning to Canvas this year and were wanting to connect with any other MYP schools to see how you setup Assignment and grading under your modules. Or you could guide us to any resources you may have.
After using Canvas for a while, I picked up a small habit that’s saved me some last-minute stress with written submissions. Even when drafts are original, longer explanations and summaries tend to reuse common phrasing, especially in research-heavy assignments. Before submitting, I usually do a quick cleanup pass to reduce…
