I would suggest that you let your instructor know that you will be absent from class. There's no way that I know of in Canvas to check a box or fill out something that would inform your instructor of your absence. Use the "Ask Your Instructor a Question" link in the "Help" menu along the far left-hand side of your screen to contact your instructor about this.
