Was this a Classic Quiz or a New Quiz? That error message sounds strange. Have you tried reporting this to Canvas Support to see what suggestions they might have for you?

Has anyone run into issues with Speedgrader erroring when opening a student submission from a dropbox? See image for error information. I accessed this directly through the gradebook and instructors are getting the same message.
