How do iI know number of students enrolled in my class

Are you a student or an instructor?  If you are a student, your instructor would be the one to determine if he/she wants the "People" course navigation button displayed in your course or not.  The "People" button would show your classmates in your course:

If you are an instructor, you can view the students in your course in a number of different ways:

* via the "People" page of the course:  How do I use the People page in a course as an ins... - Instructure Community 
* via the "Grades" page where you can see each of your students' grades: How do I use the Gradebook? - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com)
* via your course "Settings" page.  On the right side of that page, you'll see an area called "Current Users".  This will give you a numbered count of each user and their role in that course.  For example....  Students: 2, Teachers: 1, etc.
