I really do not want to check Canvas and my email for student questions. How can I either disable inbox messages or have them forwarded to my email account?
There is an institutional level feature that we can turn on for your institution that allows a user to opt out of the inbox messages and have them directly forwarded to your school email account. You'll have to talk with your CSM about getting it turned on for you. If you're not the Admin for your account, reach out to them and see if you could get it turned on. It'll be a checkbox in your personal settings. Just an FYI.
Hi @jbess ...
All of your communication methods are set up through your profile in Canvas. You can choose the kinds of way you want to be contacted (e-mail, text message, Twitter, etc.) and also the frequency of those notifications (right away, daily, weekly, not at all). Here are a bunch of Canvas Guides on how to set notification preferences. Hopefully, this info should get you on the right track:
How do Notification Preferences work?
How do I set my Notification Preferences?
What are the default Canvas Notification Preferences?
@jbess , you cannot disable Inbox messages; the Canvas Inbox is an integral part of the Canvas learning platform, and I hope over time you will find that you can accomplish more in the Inbox than simply checking students' questions: see What is Conversations? for an overview of the Canvas Inbox.
However, you can choose to conduct all of your communications with students via your external email by setting your notification preferences to have Canvas Inbox messages sent ASAP to the email account of your choice. You can then reply to the messages directly from your external email, and a copy of your replies will be preserved in the Canvas Inbox.
Here are some lessons from the Canvas Guides that will help you manage your notification preferences:
PLEASE tell me this will change. The email system in Canvas is absolutely terrible.
I don't understand how to turn of the inbox messages either.
Just FYI, if you have notifications set to receive an e-mail when a student sends you a Canvas message, then you can simply reply to the e-mail from within your e-mail client (We use Outlook) and it will "reply" to the student's Canvas message. This is my setup and I don't have to check 2 places. I simply reply to everything from within my e-mail client.
"Allow users to opt out of the Conversation's Inbox. This will cause all conversation messages and notifications to be sent as ASAP notifications to the user's primary email, hide the Conversation's Inbox unread messages badge on the Inbox, and hide the Conversation's notification preferences."
Sorry for being slow here, so the Inbox icon will remain, just the unread message badge will disappear?
Anyone else has used this feature in their Institution would be able to share some screenshots?
1. Where would one goes to opt out of Inbox
2. What does the Global Navigation looks like
3. Can I still click on Inbox (if the icon itself isn't hidden) and what would I see
4. If you are a student of a course, does that mean the "Ask your instructor a question" option from Help menu disappears? Or not? (a screenshot?)
Would Canvas Admin know who has opt out of Inbox?
Thank you so much!!
1. Once the feature is enabled, Conversations Inbox Opt Out will appear on your personal Settings page (top right Settings in old UI, or Account > Settings in the new UI). It's placed below Ways to Log In, and above Web Services, on the personal Settings page:
2. The Inbox appears in Global Navigation as usual.
3. Yes, with the feature enabled, you can still click on Inbox and see the usual initial display of read and unread messages across All Courses.
4. Ask Your Instructor a Question remains even with the feature enabled.
5. Yes, by masquerading, any Admin with Become permissions will be able to see and change the Conversations Inbox Opt Out checkbox state on behalf of another user.
CAVEAT: I can now confirm that the Conversations Inbox Opt Out feature does not currently affect or control display of the unread message count on the new UI's Inbox badge. I have an on-hold case with Canvas Support about this problem. As a suggestion, anyone else affected by this issue might also want to report it to Support mentioning JIRA issue CNVS-29400.
I'd like to just disable the Canvas e-mail feature - period, not have it forwarded. Have the students only use the official university e-mail for communication. I haven't found a way to disable Canvas e-mail functionality. Does anyone know if this is possible?
Many of my teachers currently create their syllabus on a Google Sheet with the date assigned, due date, and then all of the details of each assignment. I'm trying to get more of them to post their assignments as assignments that populate the student calendar. I was hoping they could simply upload their .csv to Canvas that…
First Feature Suggestion: Display Last Date of Attendance when using Canvas Attendance Tool One of the required pieces of information I must collect is the last date of attendance when a student violates my attendance policy. This date is federally required for institutions to determine a student’s withdrawal date under 34…
Hi everyone! I would love to hear your suggestions and best‑practice tips on implementing copyright settings. https://embed.app.guidde.com/playbooks/8eYgHHmwTXKMLxDW4LqEDX
This is my first time using the new discussion "checkpoints". I'm hoping the multiple due dates are effective, but using the "checkpoints" does seem to create other problems: They only allow for ONE "reply to topic". The way I use discussions in some of my classes is to allow for students to ask MULTIPLE questions per…
I tried the Quick Reassess feature today. Once I approved the questions and created the assessment it went to the tracker for Block 1. But I can't find the new assessment in my assessments to add to Blocks 2 & 4. If I have to recreate for each class, they won't have the same questions. I also cannot find the option to…
