Quizzes Notification

Hi, I’m trying to find the best way for instructors to be notified when a student completes a quiz in Canvas. In our setup, notifications like “All Submissions” seem to exclude quizzes. Is there a way to trigger a notification or email alert when a quiz is submitted? Thanks in advance.

At this time, Canvas does not have a built‑in notification that reliably triggers when a quiz is submitted, the same way “All Submissions” works for assignments and discussions. Quizzes (both Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes) are handled a bit differently in Canvas, which is why they’re often excluded from submission‑based notifications.

Common workarounds instructors use

If instructors need awareness that quizzes are being completed, here are the typical options:

1. Quiz Submission Logs / Moderate Quiz
   • Instructors can check submission activity via Moderate This Quiz or quiz statistics, but this is manual.
2. Assignment “To Do” list
   • Ungraded quizzes will appear in the instructor To Do list after submission, though this still requires checking Canvas rather than receiving an email alert.
3. New Quizzes + SpeedGrader
   • Submissions appear in SpeedGrader as they come in, but again without proactive notification.
4. Canvas API / Admin-level automation
   • Some institutions use custom scripts, Canvas Data, or API workflows to send emails or alerts when quiz submissions are recorded. This requires admin access and technical setup.
