This behavior has been resolved and deployed to the production environment as of 3/17/26.
Summary:
When a file is uploaded with Google Assignments LTI 1.3, the file comes through on the Canvas Submission side as a Zip file type the first time.
Expected behavior:
Instead it should keep the file type that was originally on the submission from Google.
Workaround:
I found that if you select the file from Google the first time, it showed as the zip file type, but if I remove the selected file from the submission, then go through Google to select the same file again, since the file already exists in Canvas, it showed as the proper file type that it was supposed to be.
Steps to Reproduce:
Prerequisite: Published course with Google Assignments 1.3, a published file upload assignment, and a student.
- As the student, navigate to the assignment and select to upload using the Google Assignment (Google Drive 1.3) tool.
- Log into your Google Education account if not already and select a file to upload.
- After uploading the file to Canvas, notice it shows as a Zip file instead of the file type it was on the Google Drive side.
- As a bonus, remove the file from the submission, then repeat steps 2 and 3, and notice it then displays properly.
